The National Religious Retirement Office assists religious communities with retirement needs through its distribution of funds; through assistance services that include workshops, seminars; and coordination of a volunteer network of consultants trained in retirement planning, eldercare, and finance, and through sponsorship of a national annual appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious.

Since the first Retirement Fund for Religious appeal was conducted by the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO) in 1988, more than $500 million has been distributed in grants to religious communities in the United States. In 2007, NRRO awarded $23 million in Basic Grants to 482 religious communities or an average $919 for every member of a Catholic religious community who is age 70 or older.
